How AI marking scores speaking and writing

7 min read

Speaking and writing answers are marked by AI against the official criteria for each task, within seconds.

Writing

The AI reads the answer and gives a band (IELTS) or score (PTE) for each official criterion, such as Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. It points out the exact sentences that cost marks and gives one clear next step.

Speaking

The recording is turned into a transcript first, then marked the same way, against Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. In a live speaking practice the examiner can ask short follow-up questions, and everything the student says counts towards the mark.

Credits

Each marked answer uses AI credits from your monthly allowance. AI usage in your admin shows what has been used. Unused credits do not roll over.

How far to trust it

AI marks are practice estimates, not official scores, and they can be wrong. Your teachers can review and change any mark from the marking queue, and students can ask a teacher for a second opinion.
